Gift Acceptance Policy

The Election Technology Education Fund accepts contributions that advance our mission without creating undue obligation or risk. Most routine gifts (cash, checks, credit or debit payments, ACH or wire transfers, donor-advised fund or foundation grants, and publicly traded securities) may be accepted after standard review. We also welcome in-kind support that directly aids our work. Restricted gifts are accepted when the donor’s restriction clearly aligns with board-approved programs.

Some contributions require additional scrutiny because of complexity or potential conflicts. Gifts of closely held stock, cryptocurrency, real property, intellectual property, or vehicles; bequests with material restrictions; and any contribution that could imply endorsement of a vendor or product are reviewed before acceptance.

ETEF may decline a gift if it conflicts with our mission, compromises our independence, is impractical or disproportionately costly to administer, or would be illegal or unethical. We follow IRS requirements for receipting. Donors are responsible for determining the fair market value of non-cash gifts for tax purposes; ETEF provides good-faith acknowledgments describing the item or service and the date received.

Public recognition, including naming opportunities, must avoid any appearance of vendor endorsement and requires advance approval by the board or a delegated board committee. The Executive Director, or a designee, is authorized to accept standard gifts under this policy. Items flagged for additional review are referred to the board or its committee for a decision.
